VIENNA (AP) Max Schrems wasn’t sure what he would get when he asked Facebook to send him a record of his personal data from three years of using the site.
What the 24-year-old Austrian law student didn’t expect, though, was 1,222 pages of data on a CD. It included chats he had deleted more than a year ago, “pokes” dating back to 2008, invitations to which he had never...

everyone has those horrible days (even in their 7th year of teaching, like me).
Today, I made a really, really big mistake at work. A human one, and then managed to make it worse. I can’t go into details, but I want you to know that it has me incredibly stressed and I might have called my parents after work in tears.
So, when you have those horrible days, remember they will be fewer in...

Teaching Tolerance: Make Room for Pirate Girls,... →
One of my fondest and most salient memories from the past school year happened toward the beginning of the year. Joe had just turned 5. He was making his own book about pirates.
Each page of the book was a picture of a different pirate. It was more a collection of images and ideas than a fluid story. There were pirates doing various things. All of the pirates were referred to with masculine...

“I don’t want teachers on the unemployment line. I want them in the classroom,” Secretary Duncan said last Friday at an American Jobs Act roundtable in Richmond, Va. “This is really a moment of truth for the country,” Arne said. Either invest in education, he added, or other countries will pass us by.

jekoh asked: Was there a purposeful ironic charm to the 4th of July contact from the co-operating teacher in England? Also, I am amazed that a man could still walk after being kicked there with a toe pick. There's a flirtation technique I don't know that anyone's tried before!
emilyinengland asked: Hello! I know I could figure this out by perusing your blog more thoroughly, but I'm wondering what your thoughts are on Teach for America. I just completed my final interview yesterday and am continuing to research it while I wait to hear back. Any thoughts or experiences you've had or heard of would be helpful! Thanks :)

Twenty-one high schools in four states are working this fall to restructure their academic programs into “lower division” and “upper division” courses that are aimed at readying all students for community college by the end of their sophomore year.
Students who pass a series of exams, at that point, could leave high school and enroll—without remedial courses—in a two-year college, or stay in...

14. What fictional character would you love to have as your best friend and why?
Harry Potter, obviously. I have loved the series for over 10 years. Plus — invisibility cloak? Yes please.
A character less obvious? Biff from Christopher Moore’s book Lamp: The Gospel According to Biff. HILARIOUS, regardless of your religion.

We need adjustable wrenches. →
girlwithalessonplan:
Today in tech theater, we put together dance tables and risers for the choir concert. There is only one adjustable wrench, and a smattering of sized ones that weren’t the right sizes.
It all took longer than it needed because we had to pass the wrench. 18 kids. 1 adjustable wrench.
If you could help, I would appreciate it.
