NY Times: With More Than Yawns, Pupils Rate... →
For these 15 minutes every week or two, the children have a chance to soak up Mr. Imwalle’s passion for writing. They see that creative writing requires hard work, revision and risk — a risk that their own teacher is willing to take. And they discover that contrary to the usual order of things, they have something to teach him. “It really has gotten them excited about writing,” said Mr....

PicLits.com: Inspired Picture Writing →
For those of us who do not have photoshop. PicLits.com is a creative writing site that matches beautiful images with carefully selected keywords in order to inspire you. The object is to put the right words in the right place and the right order to capture the essence, story, and meaning of the picture. My students recently had to make post cards from magazine clippings to demonstrate the...

lhuddles: Over the past few months, I have had many instances where someone said to me, “Are you sure you want to go into teaching?” Usually it deals with a parent complaint, a silly decision by the administration, or something crazy a student has said/done. My answer has always been yes (and it still is). It is tough when you can’t be everything for everyone.  However, know for every...

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy v3.0 →
roughdrafts1: This is a long paper (74 pages!) but it has a table of contents if you’re in the mood for a quick browse. It applies Bloom’s Taxonomy to digital resources. I found a few interesting things to consider in it. For example, Delicious, which I knew about but didn’t consider using in a classroom context.

sandyl: Writing a unit on Fairy Tales for third graders should be more enjoyable than this… and ideas on cool activities bring them on! There are a lot of Fairy Tales retold and different culture’s versions of the stories.  I’d use the different versions as mentor texts and then have the kids write their own.

Skype in the Classroom: a new network for teachers →
theteachersdesk: On Tuesday, Skype launched Skype in the Classroom, a dedicated teacher network. Using the platform, teachers can create profiles that describe their classes and teaching interests. They can then search a directory of teachers from all over the world by student age range, language and subject, finding classrooms that match theirs. This will allow teachers to connect with other...

It's an honor to have such a pleasant teacher following my silly Tumblr. I have a small question. Can one pursue a career in the UN women's wing as well as teach children simultaneously? It sounds a tad tough and demanding but I have been offered the opportunity. I'm taking my time to evaluate the pros and cons of such a scenario. Your...

Minn. Student Expelled For Posting Hit List On... →
A Minnesota high school expelled a freshman who allegedly posted a hit list on his Facebook page. The list on Facebook included 30 names of school staff, students, and graduates that the student wanted to see dead, Chisholm High School Superintendent James Varichak told the Duluth News Tribune. There was no threat in the post, other than the heading bearing the words hit list. The decision to...

kicksandgiggles: The results of this poll are disheartening, but the saddest part is that it doesn’t surprise me. A majority of Americans think that neurologically based learning disabilities are the result of laziness and cling to other serious misperceptions about the disorders, a new national poll found. Confusion about the definition and causes feeds into a stigma that has long...

Kimiya Haghighi, 17, had a prose problem. As much as her teachers preached concise writing, her sentences remained long and overwrought — the words poured out, unpunctuated, one after another. Then Aubrey Ludwig, her 11th-grade English teacher at Langley High School, introduced her class to Twitter, requiring that students tweet their responses to a Hemingway assignment in 140 characters or...

Foodmakers have used dyes since ancient times to make food more appealing to the eye. But the practice has so invaded the modern psyche that artificial dyes are being used even on some pet foods.
