CNBC is reporting that Yahoo will hold a “product-related” news event this Monday in New York City. None other than CEO Marissa Mayer will be speaking at the event. Exactly what Yahoo plans to announce hasn’t yet been disclosed, but news of the event comes in the midst of rumors pointing to an acquisition of Tumblr. The extraordinarily popular microblogging site is based out of Manhattan, so the location would make sense if a deal has indeed been finalized.
Reports indicate that Yahoo could spend up to $1 billion for Tumblr, which would represent Mayer’s biggest spend yet after high profile acquisitions of Summly and Astrid. The company has also recently signed exclusive content partnerships that will bring it video programming from Saturday Night Live, World Wrestling Entertainment, and others.
Update: Yahoo has made the event official, providing The Verge with an invitation that reads, “Join us as we share something special.” Clearly the company isn’t being shy about hyping its coming announcement. We’ll be bringing you all the news as it happens Monday starting at 5PM EST.

Cool announcement graphic.

Oh please.  Don’t be a tumblr story.

Now, I am going to bed.

So nice of Teach for America to jump on the “schools are broken and we need non-educators to fix them” bandwagon. As seen on every tray in the TSA security line at the Detroit airport. #sigh

Ugh.

If I had a magic 8 ball, I would ask it:

Should I go to bed right now?

I am so, so, so, so tired.

For those of you who criticize Janelle’s signature monochromatic look.
From her speech on “Black Girls Rock”:
“When I started my music career, I was a maid. I used to clean houses. My mother was a proud janitor. My stepfather, who raised me like his very own, worked at the post office and my father was a trashman. They all wore uniforms and that’s why I stand here today, in my black and white, and I wear my uniform to honor them.
This is a reminder that I have work to do. I have people to uplift. I have people to inspire. And today, I wear my uniform proudly as a Cover Girl. I want to be clear, young girls, I didn’t have to change who I was to become a Cover Girl. I didn’t have to become perfect because I’ve learned throughout my journey that perfection is the enemy of greatness.
Embrace what makes you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable.” - Janelle Monáe

How do you fit the Geometry Standard into your Preschool Classroom?

1) Patterning Blocks! Let kids manipulate different shapes. Ask questions about the different shapes? How many sides does the hexagon have? Are they all the same length?

2-4) Art! Let kids explore different shapes - this ‘circle art’ is great for young learners who are just learning their shapes.

5-6) Building! The kids need to be able to experiment with different 3 dimensional shapes. This is a great math concept because the kids can actually SEE that it takes more blocks to build the longer side of a shape.

A student is told she can not use her Spanish-English dictionary to help her on the Reading/LA portion of her state’s standardized test. Spanish is her native language; she isn’t fluent in English yet by any stretch.

Unsurprisingly, upon hearing the news, she is in tears.

This test matters, you…

If I told you my reaction the Charlotte in Charlotte’s Web as a child, you would think I am a cold heart-less person.

EDD: How would you feel about teaching at a school that you had attended?

msleahhbic:

meghanjh-student-teaching:

Better explanation: How would you feel about teaching at a school you had attended as a student? Would your opinion be shaped by if the current principal was your principal or if the teachers you had were still there?

My elementary art teacher is retiring this year. I’d be a shoe-in for the job.

But I can’t. It’s just too weird.

My mom’s boyfriend (manfriend?), who also happens to be my old fifth grade teacher, still works there. Too weird.

The majority of my elementary teachers have retired, but I don’t think I could do it. I have no idea if I could successfully separate my experience from the way it is today. The school has changed radically; demographics, curriculum, and instructional style are nothing like when I was there.

I did it.  It made it a lot easier for the kids to develop relationships with me since I was “one of them” at one time.  Also, I knew exactly what to expect from staff members that were there when I was a student.

EDD: What is the number one must-have item for a first year teacher’s classroom?

Good question! Help me out! What do I need?

Hand-sanitizer.
