I think, in order to make us students learn better, teachers should use interpretive dance to teach students

Oh, but I do.

This comic could have been created based on my classroom teacher’s approach!

Did you ever consider a “token-economy” is widely encouraged in some circles and in districts using CTEM here in Florida if you use it you can score higher on an observation?   I’m not promoting it necessarily, although I do use rewards in my classroom.  I’m just saying did you even talk to your CT about why she chose to use rewards or “bribes”?

My Students: When it comes to teaching about “old stuff”, like ancient Egyptian myths, sometimes it takes an excellent book to engage today’s students.

My students are gifted and honors students with a genuine love of reading. For middle schoolers, this attitude is generally unheard of. They are the sweetest and most voracious group I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. For them, this experience of reading The Red Pyramid would provide entertainment and enrichment.

My Project: With a class set of The Red Pyramid, I will be able to engage my students with an entire unit. We will be able to support Social Studies curriculum, as well as tackling Language Arts standards in an engaging and fun way.

If we read this book, I will have the students choose from a variety of projects to present to their peers. We will also take part in Socratic Seminars, and tie in primary source material and non-fiction texts for an in-depth look at the impact of Egyptian culture on modern day culture.

By donating to this project, you will play a part in lighting the fires of my students. Together, we can give these students a unique reading experience that will inspire them for years to come.

Signal boost!

Thank you tumblr teachers!

tantalizingtidbits:

Last week, I had a major moment of questioning whether I was in the right profession. I can’t guarantee that I will never feel like that again (I have a feeling it will be a frequent thing), but the support the tumblr teaching community gave me was inexpressibly helpful. It is nice not to hear “oh, you’ll be fine,” but rather “I’ve been there too. It sucks, but you know what? It does get better.” I trust you all so much more because you are educators!

Thank you for sticking with me and supporting me in my first year even though you have no idea who I am. :) It means the world to me.

Just paid $320 for textbooks for one course.

prettywordsandpictures:

Definitely did not miss this part of university. So now I have to recover almost $800 by December so I can pay for my next course.

Suggestion to all of those in undergrad / grad school.

Find out if it is OK to use an earlier edition of a text book.  The amount you have to change to make a new edition is very small.  Most professors will say yes, and may even be working from an older edition.

I have never paid more than $15 bucks for an old text book on half.com or used on amazon.

I saved thousands this way.

The Value of Pre-K Education, Take 2

If we were forced to make a tradeoff, we’d be better off reducing our K-12 funding and putting the money into increased funding of pre-K programs.

Would you be offended?

I just got my copy of the They Might Be Giants album, Here Comes Science! in the mail, and I would like to start out by saying it is AWESOME. I love They Might Be Giants anyway, but to take some scientific concepts (Scientific Method, The Solar System, The Elements, The Spectrum of Light, Speed/Velocity, Circulatory System) and set them to some catchy music: Incredible.

The great thing is I know I can use several of these songs next year to help kids remember ROYGBIV or facts about the sun or the planets… And it was only $12 on Amazon, but-

Several of the reviews on Amazon have issues with the lyrics of a few of the songs, and for some of them I can understand.  The line “I enjoy stories about angels, unicorns, and elves, but when I want some knowledge, whether simple or abstract, I turn to science” sounds like it’s saying angels are just as fictitious as elves and unicorns (even though I would interpret it as ‘Stories about angels aren’t going to teach you any scientific principles’).  What surprised me more was how many people took issues with TMBG saying that evolution is real, and including a song called My Brother The Ape where all of the living organisms on the planet get together for a family reunion.  People were saying that TMBG is pushing science as a religion, and that they shouldn’t be teaching small children (honestly, that’s who this CD is meant for, but you should really check out THE ADVENTURES OF DAVY CROCKET IN OUTER SPACE) about Evolution.  Seriously?

I know a lot of schools don’t want teachers to mention Evolution because it scares creationist parents, but would any of you be offended by these songs? They’re incredible. Seriously, go to Youtube and check them out (the CD comes with a DVD of cartoons for each song narrated by John and John… Killer stuff)

I personally would not be offended.

My advice is this:

Check your district’s policy on teaching evolution.  If they teach it, move to step 2.  Check the lyrics yourself.  Is there anything that directly demeans people of any religious faith?  If no, move to step 3.   Ask your team their opinions or if you have a mentor ask your mentor.  If they are supportive, move forward.

The end.
