Four years ago, this You Can Vote However You Like video (from the Ron Clark Academy) went viral. I believe it was before I was on Tumblr. I shared it with the 5th and 6th grade teachers at my school. They in turn, shared it with their students. These kids’ families were not very political-interested, but after seeing this video (and since it is cover-esque of a song they loved) — they were eager to do their own research. It was interesting to hear from the kids who they would have voted for and the basis for that. Rarely had I ever heard kids know WHY they liked a particular candidate. These weren’t kids very engaged in school — but this video spurred real learning, gaining skills, and critical thinking. I would love for a 5th or 6th grade class to do something similar this year.
